How to Pick a Shingle Color You’ll Still Love in 15 Years

A&W Roofing · 2026-08-04 · Mobile & Baldwin County, AL

Most people spend weeks choosing a paint color they can redo next spring for a few hundred dollars, and about ten minutes choosing the roof color they will live with for two decades. Seen from the street, the roof is roughly 40 percent of your home's visible exterior. It deserves the weeks.

Start with what is not changing

Your brick, stone and any siding you do not plan to repaint are the fixed notes the roof has to harmonize with. A few pairings that consistently work along the Gulf Coast:

Light or dark on the Gulf Coast?

You will read online that dark roofs are wrong for the South because they run hotter. There is truth in the physics, but with today's shingles and, far more importantly, proper attic ventilation, the real-world difference on your power bill is much smaller than the internet suggests. We install plenty of charcoal and black roofs here. What matters more:

Check the neighborhood rules before you fall in love. If you have an HOA, get the approved color list first. And step outside: a roof that matches the three houses beside it never looks wrong; one that fights the whole street always does.

Never pick from a two-inch swatch

Shingle colors change completely between a sample board in a showroom and 30 squares in full sun. Before you commit:

  1. See it on a whole roof. We built a free Shingle Visualizer for exactly this, put any of 48 real colors on a sample home, or upload a photo of your own house and our AI will re-shingle it in seconds.
  2. Look at real addresses. Ask us where we have installed the color you are considering and drive past at different times of day.
  3. Hold the physical sample in daylight against your brick and trim, we bring full-size shingles to every estimate, morning light and evening light both.

Shortlist two or three in the visualizer, and we will bring the real thing to your driveway.
